About this ebook

Short stories as literary work are infinitely beneficial learning materials for learners. Nine short stories presented in this book cover Thematic learning themes for fifth-grade elementary learners. The pieces are specially established based on the integration of the Thematic subject learning themes and Balinese culture accompanied by compatible learning activities in the form of a simple In-Class Activity. Each session covers background information, In-Class Activity, short story, and worksheet. The inclusion of the culture, topic, elements of the story, and learning activities is done carefully to provide learners familiar input yet challenging experiences. Furthermore, it is to help learners develop their language skills, thematic knowledge, cultural introduction, and thinking skills.

About the author

Sinta Ary Gasella is an English and a primary teacher. She received her bachelor and master degree in English La­nguage Education from Ganesha Uni­versity of Education. She ex­pe­rienc­ed teaching English in ESL and EFL settings from preschool to junior high school levels with Indonesia na­tional and Cambridge Curriculum. Her passion in teaching has led her to join Science primary teacher training in 2017 and Cambridge Assess­ment Conference in 2019 certified by Cambridge International Exa­minations. After years of experiences in working with stu­dent­s in formal schools, she expands her teaching skills by work­ing as a homeschool teacher using British Curriculum for primary level. She is currently a vice principal in a primary school in Bali and enjoying her time as a primary teacher working with kids.  

Putu Kerti Nitiasih is a Professor in Eng­lish Language Education at Ganesha Uni­ver­sity of Education. Her publication re­lat­ed to English Language teaching has been pu­blish­ed at many national and inter­na­tional jour­nals. Instead of writing, she also did lots of Research in Applied Linguis­tics, as well as gi­ving community services all over Indone­sia. From doing researches, she produced 6 sto­ry big-books entitled Al­pha­bet World, Little Dog Doggy, I can Be Fit. Beside book story she also develops gamification which are based on Balinese local story, namely I Cupak Lan I Gerantang, Manik Angkeran, and Timun Mas. The gamification functioned both for teaching English and character education. These gamification lead her to grant a pre-start up research which was offered by the ministry of edu­ca­tion and culture. To help elementary teachers teaching English in the pandemic era, she developed 6 educational video for year 4, 5 and 6. As a lecturer, she also writes a book entitled “Bilingualism and Bilingual Education” and becomes a co-author of a textbook entitled “Trends in Language Teaching and Learning.” Besides doing research and developing learning media, she gave trainings to teachers and school principals about Classroom Action Re­search and Action Research all over Bali as well as in Manggarai, Larantuka, East Sumba which has a great significance to their teaching and learning instruction. She also teaches and takes a role as an external examiner at Udayana University, and got in­vited as a keynote speaker in Bali, Sumatra and Java. 

Made Hery Santosa is a teaching staff at Ganesha University of Education, Bali, Indonesia. His works have been published in many publishers and journals, like Nova Science Publishers, Journal on English as a Foreign Langua­ge, Journal of Educational Technology, Journal of English Education and Li­nguis­tic Studies, Mahima Institute Indo­ne­sia, and Nilacakra Publishing House. He is an article editor and reviewer of several journals, including SAGE Open (US), TESOL Journal (US), Kasetsart Journal of Social Sciences (Thailand), International Journal of Language and Applied Linguistics (IJLEAL) (Malaysia), and many other journals.

He wrote books on education, TEFL, and educational tech­no­logy, inter alia, “Virtual Reality-based Learning in Action” (2021), “Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk Anak Abad 21: Pe­ga­ngan Guru Profesional” (2021), “Gamification in English Teaching and Learning” (2020), “English for Nursing Assistant: Supple­men­tary E-Learning-based Materials” (2020), “Virtual Reality for Eng­lish Learners” (2020), and “Penerapan Core Skills di Kelas-kelas di Indonesia” (2019). He also published some book chapters, they are “The Effect of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning Quizizz on High School Students' Reading Comprehension in the English Learn­ing Context” in Literacies, Culture, and Society towards In­dus­­trial Revolution 4.0: Reviewing Policies, Expanding Research, Enriching Practices in Asia (2021), “Virtual Reality-Infused La­nguage Learning” in Technology-Enhanced Language Teaching in Action (2020), “Investigating Students' Approaches to Learning in an EFL Blended Learning Context” in Current Issues in English Education, Linguistics, and Literature (2018), and “A 'Beehive' Ap­proach to the Research Supervision Journey” in Conducting Research in a Changing and Challenging World (2013). Apart from writing in journal and books, he also writes stories and poetry, like “A Magic Rabbit and Other Animal Stories” (2021), “The Little Alien” (2021), and “Empat Musim Cinta” (2020). He is a developer of language learning media based on literacy, character education, and innovative pedagogies, in digital form and Android appli­ca­tions, like "Animals of Nusantara", "Kiwa Tengen", and "Edukezy".

Currently, he serves as Head of the Online Learning Center at the Faculty of Languages ​​and Arts, Program Director at the Indonesian Association for Technology-enhanced Language Learn­ing (iTELL), leading trainer at British Council Indonesia, and Director of Community Service at the Indonesia Extensive Read­ing Association (IERA). He is also the founder and chairman of the Manik Cendekia Foundation, founder of Bali Edukasi, Komunitas Pejuang Beasiswa Bali, Smart Guru, and co-founder of the Edu­ke­zy Application (Student and Teacher) and Susila Lan Dharma Virtual Reality. He was invited as a keynote speaker at academic forums at local, national, regional, and international levels, such as the TESOL Convention, Asia TEFL, CamTESOL, TEFLIN, ICEAC. He is also a trainer at workshops for teachers and prin­cipals in Indonesia.
