TLS, OBSERVER, SUNDAY TIMES, FT, GUARDIAN, DAILY MAIL AND EVENING STANDARD BOOKS OF THE YEAR 2017

Sleep is one of the most important aspects of our life, health and longevity and yet it is increasingly neglected in twenty-first-century society, with devastating consequences: every major disease in the developed world - Alzheimer's, cancer, obesity, diabetes - has very strong causal links to deficient sleep.

In this book, the first of its kind written by a scientific expert, Professor Matthew Walker explores twenty years of cutting-edge research to solve the mystery of why sleep matters. Looking at creatures from across the animal kingdom as well as major human studies, Why We Sleep delves into everything from what really happens during REM sleep to how caffeine and alcohol affect sleep and why our sleep patterns change across a lifetime, transforming our appreciation of the extraordinary phenomenon that safeguards our existence.

'Startling, vital ... a life-raft' Guardian

'Passionate, urgent . . . it had a powerful effect on me' Observer

I have always maintained that sleep is the most pleasurable activity of our everyday life. And having suffered from insomnia at a very young age, I attach a lot of importance to sleep. For this very reason, I decided to listen to this book. Whatever the author has written about sleep and the phenomenons related to it like circadian rhythm, REM and Deep NREM sleep were a pleasure to learn. Now that I have finished this book, I have become more attuned to the significance of a healthy sleep and the perils of insufficient sleep, especially while driving. For a healthier and disease-free life, sleeping at the same time and for the same number of hours every night is paramount. Going forward, will try sincerely to tap into the health benefits of a good overnight sleep.

Author explain the intricate workings of our sleep, what it offers and more importantly what happens when you deprive individuals of sleep. It details the chemical and physiological changes which we undergo during sleep. Often undervalued, considered waste of time, and people mis-guided to bio-hack their body by optimizing sleep is basically damaging your body. Bottomline : Get atleast 7 hours of sleep everyday to keep your body functioning at the highest level.

Never read such a well-backed book providing scientific studies for every claim, and admitting caveats where appropriate. Presents compelling, intriguing, and practical information about the oft-understated powerful influence of sleep.
