As well as a writer, Alfredo d'Escragnolle Taunay, Viscount of Taunay (1843-1899), was musician, professor, engineer, historian, politician, sociologist, and a veteran of the Paraguayan War. Innocencia, his masterpiece, is a classic of Brazilian literature, straddling the line between Romanticism and Realism.
