THE SILVER SWORD SOME SPOILERS This is a book about a family in Warsaw during WW2. The family broken up by the nazis; the father escapes a work camp and goes to Switzerland, the mother gets sent to work in Germany and the children remain in Warsaw. The book focuses on the children, who meet a young boy named Jan, who possesses a small box containing a silver paper knife, belonging to the family's mother. They then together travel to Switzerland to hopefully meet with their father. The book is very simple (it is a children's book after all). The book is extremely optimistic; some of the things that happen do not accurately reflect the aimlessness of the aftermath of the end of the war. The book, however, does sometimes illustrate the horrors. The plot itself is very easy to follow and sometimes surprising, but later on it is predictable (the ending has to be good, it is a children's book).

My Grade Five teacher read this to our class. It's probably the only really good thing I remember about her. It's a great adventure story set in WWII Poland. How a family was split up by the war was reunited by an orphaned street boy. It's a great read at any age.
