This is one book that has to be read, it starts slow but the pace picks up, you struggle to put it down and then you realise why! Even though this only focuses on Julius Caesar's first few years it forms a crucial foundation of his character. The fiction subtly intertwined is done so gracefully it fits like a gladius fits it's scabbard. At the end of the book Conn Iggulden has an entire description of why what fictions characters and events have been added.

Excellent book by one of my favourite authors, it brings the young Caesar to life and the time in which he lived. I recommend his other series about Genghis Khan and his heirs, family and generals.

Nope, not a fan! I loved the Genghis series but won't bother with the rest of these Roman ones.
