It contains eight stories: A Haunted House, A Society, Monday or Tuesday, An Unwritten Novel, The String Quartet, Blue & Green, Kew Gardens, The Mark on the Wall. Virginia Woolf explains her new approach to writing: "Examine for a moment an ordinary mind on an ordinary day. The mind receives a myriad impressions-trivial, fantastic, evanescent, or engraved with the sharpness of steel. From all sides they come, an incessant shower of innumerable atoms; and as they fall, as they shape themselves into the life of Monday or Tuesday."

Virginia Woolf, geboren am 25. Januar 1882 in London und gestorben am 28. März 1941 bei Rodmell nahe Lewes, Sussex war eine britische Schriftstellerin und Verlegerin. Mit ihrem avantgardistischen Werk zählt sie zu den bedeutendsten Autorinnen der klassischen Moderne.
