Dos diferentes cenários nacionais, a situação de seca característica do nordeste brasileiro é a que inspirou muitas das maiores obras da literatura nacional. Entre elas, o romance Vidas Secas, de Graciliano Ramos, lançado em 1938, se tornou um clássico por excelência. Há algumas razões para isso. Primeiramente, ao tratar da miséria de uma família que foge exaustiva e periodicamente da seca em busca de terras onde possam sobreviver, o texto trata do sofrimento humano, inerente a cada um de nós. Segundo, o autor estava intimamente familiarizado com o sofrimento daquele povo e com a paisagem local e, por fim, pela genialidade e sensibilidade com que a obra foi escrita.
