Il subit la répression économique de la droite et du parti social-démocrate, le Mapai. Toutefois, en tant que militant communiste égyptien, il continue à lutter pour la paix entre Juifs et Palestiniens et contre le racisme anti-Arabe. Mais il découvre aussi une autre forme de discrimination raciale, moins connue : celle qui sévit entre Juifs ashkénazes, venant d'Europe occidentale, et Juifs séfarades, originaires du Moyen Orient.
