'Varney the Vampire' (1845-1847) was a serial publication that helped institutionalize many tropes associated with vampire lore, such as vampiric immortality and the act of staking a vampire through the heart. The vast narrative, comprising over 600,000 words, chronicled the exploits of Sir Francis Varney and reflected the innate fears and mores of Victorian England, while also melodramatically interrogating themes of morality, redemption, and monstrosity.
