Fluent in several languages, Conrad did not begin to learn English until he was in his twenties, yet remarkably, he became one of the greatest English novelists, best known for works such as 'Heart of Darkness' (1899), 'Lord Jim' (1900), and 'Nostromo' (1904). His writing is marked by a deep-felt concern with moral conflicts, the complexities of social justice, and the psychological underpinnings of human behavior, as he explored the inner workings of humanity against the backdrop of the sea and exotic locales, common settings due to his career in the French and British merchant navies.
