कोई भी खेल आज मात्र खेल नहीं रह गया है। खेल को भी कॉरियर बनाकर धन और कीर्ति अर्जित की जा सकती है। भारत में अनेक खेल प्रचलित हैं। उनमें फुटबॉल भी एक है। फुटबॉल का सबसे अधिक विकास इंग्लैंड में हुआ। फुटबॉल का प्रथम क्लब ‘शेफील्ड फुटबॉल क्लब’ सन् 1857 में इंग्लैंड में स्थापित हुआ। सन् 1863 में ‘लंदन फुटबॉल एसोसिएशन’ की स्थापना हुई। भारत में फुटबॉल का प्रारंभ अंग्रेजों ने किया था। सन् 1948 में लंदन ओलंपिक में भारत ने एक स्वतंत्र राष्‍ट्र के रूप में फुटबॉल में अंतरराष्‍ट्रीय स्तर पर भाग लिया।
