सुचेता का जन्म एक बंगाली परिवार में 25 जून, 1908 को हरियाणा के अंबाला शहर में हुआ। विवाह से पहले उनका नाम सुचेता मजूमदार था। वे एस.एन. मजूमदार की बेटी थीं। वे एक सरकारी डॉक्टर और राष्ट्रीय आंदोलन के समर्थक थे। उनका परिवार एक आदर्शवादी परिवार था। पिता ब्रह्म समाज के अनुयायी थे। वे मानवता की एक दुर्लभ कृति थीं। उन्होंने भारत में सांस्कृतिक एकीकरण की भावना को जन्म दिया।
राष्ट्रवाद उनके रग-रग में दौड़ता था। यही कारण था कि बचपन से ही अंग्रेजों की क्रूरता के खिलाफ सुचेता के मन में गुस्सा था और देश के लिए कुछ कर गुजरने का जुनूनी जज्बा। अपनी किताब ‘एन अनफिनिश्ड ऑटोबायोग्राफी’ में उन्होंने बचपन के एक ऐसे ही किस्से का जिक्र किया है।
