What criteria could be used to claim any music as global? The most obvious one is high volumes of sales or music video clicks. However I try to think beyond this to the influence of certain musical forms like rap and even punk that have a following in most urban centres even if the products that result do not show up on sales charts.
Another bass line is provided by an understanding of the suppressed influence of African culture on Western rock and pop that drives the commercial dominance of western music.
About the author
Stefan Szczelkun was a member of The Scratch Orchestra and later organised a collective book on political musics called 'Agit Disco'. They has recently be published in an expanded edition in Japan by ele-books.
