Al nome di Michail Aleksandrovic Bakunin (1814-1876) si associa immediatamente la seducente immagine dell'anarchico libertario che ha consacrato la propria vita alla fede politica e all'attivismo rivoluzionario. Ha affrontato il carcere, la duplice condanna a morte commutata prima in ergastolo e poi in lavori forzati, la deportazione in Siberia, l'evasione e quindi la lotta per il movimento operaio e l'Internazionale, in Europa. Ha raggiunto la statura dell'eroe e ha saputo affascinare tanta gioventù di diverse epoche. Del suo eroismo affabile e seduttivo rende merito Maurizio Maggiani nella prefazione, ricreando l'aura mitica, dolce e maestosa al contempo, che ha circondato e continua a circondare il personaggio di Michail Bakunin, profeta e maestro di libertà. "Stato e anarchia", scritto nel 1873, fu pubblicato in russo, senza il nome dell'autore, a Zurigo. Distribuito clandestinamente in Russia, esercitò un'influenza profondissima sulla gioventù rivoluzionaria.
