Agnes, an apprentice nurse in London, attended a lecture after a night shift and inadvertently fell asleep in the front row. On the stage is a Dutch doctor, Frahm der Linsen, a man who is always being gazed at passionately by the nurses. After the lecture, Agnes was called into his waiting room and scolded, "You lack respect, and you're too thick." If I had been as beautiful as my sister, I wonder if he would have said that to me? Agnes was disturbed by both her feelings of inferiority and fondness for him. After that, however, she began to run into him more and more...!
