ऐनी बेसेंट अदम्य साहस से भरपूर महिला थीं; जिन्होंने इंग्लैंड ही नहीं; भारत में भी अपनी छाप छोड़ी। उनका जीवन सदैव स्वतंत्र विचारधारा से प्रेरित रहा। एक अक्तूबर; 1847 को क्लैफम; लंदन में जन्मी ऐनी बेसेंट का असली नाम ऐनी वुड था। वे लंदन में बस गए आयरिश मूल के मध्यवर्गीय परिवार से थीं। उनके पिता विलियम वुड डॉक्टर थे। उनकी माँ का नाम ऐमिली मॉरिस था। ऐनी बेसेंट जब पाँच साल की थीं; तभी उनके पिता का देहांत हो गया था। उनके परिवार की आमदनी का कोई स्रोत नहीं बचा। उनकी माँ ने स्थिति सँभाली और हैरो स्कूल में बोर्डिंग हाउस में काम करना शुरू कर दिया। परिवार की आर्थिक स्थिति कमजोर ही बन रही तो ऐमिली ने ऐनी के पालन-पोषण की जिम्मेदारी अपनी सहेली ऐलन मैरियट को सौंप दी। ऐलन ने ऐनी को अच्छी शिक्षा और अच्छे संस्कार दिए। ऐमिली ने ही उनके अंदर स्वतंत्र चेतना और सामाजिक दायित्व की भावना पैदा की। इन्हीं दोनों भावनाओं पर ऐनी बेसेंट के जीवन की नींव पड़ी। उन्होंने यूरोप का दौरा भी किया और रोमन कैथोलिक धर्म के प्रति झुकाव महसूस किया।
