Porcupines are small animals that are part of the rodent family. That is the same family that rats and mice are a part of.

Porcupines are brown or black. Some look yellowish or reddish. They can also be white.

Many porcupines have quills that have black and white stripes. This can help them be seen in the dark.

Porcupines do not have hair on their bodies. Instead they have quills. Quills are very hard and sharp hairs.
