Jane Austen’s earliest novel, Northanger Abbey is perhaps the author’s most light-hearted work. The main heroine, Catherine Morland, whose vision of the world is heavily affected by the numerous Gothic novels she has read, enters Bath, a place beloved by the members of the high society. As she makes new acquaintances, naive and impressionable Catherine looks at them through the prism of the Gothic novels popular at the time and, thus, creates comical misunderstandings throughout the story.
