I really enjoyed Nina’s debut, The Daughter in Law and was eagerly awaiting for what she was going to come up with next. I wasn’t disappointed. Her Darkest Fear is is a great addition to her bibliography and is a great read. I also have to mention the fantastic cover for this book, which is so striking and sets off the tone of the book perfectly. Well done to the designer. Nina has created a haunting tale that focuses on the main character Frankie and the grief she has harboured for 20 years over the tragic death of her brother Keifer. The chapters alternate from the present, back to the past, that Nina provides via flashbacks and journal entries, which I thought was a great touch. In the lead up the 20th anniversary of Keifer’s death, mysterious things start to happen and it soon becomes clear that there is more to this than meets the eye. The character of Frankie is so complex. It is hard to read sometimes as she falls deeper and deeper into darkness as her grief takes over, which in turn causes struggles in her current relationships. We see her spiral and use alcohol as a means to cope. The other characters are a diverse bunch and are used to make you second guess everything. They have been well written, delveloped and serve their purpose well. Her Darkest Fear is a slow burn, as Nina concentrates on Frankie’s backstory, but it is not an effort to read it and at no time did I get frustrated by this. It is all integral to the story where it all leads to a conclusion that was completely unexpected and I didn’t see coming! All up, Her Darkest Fear is a solid read and a great escape to get lost in during this unsettling time that the world is in at the moment. With an intriguing plot, well-developed characters, that is all brought together through fluid and engaging writing, this is a must-read for 2020. It was a pleasure to read and review Her Darkest Fear which I recommend. Thank you to NetGalley, Boldwood Books and Nina Manning for allowing me to read an advanced copy of Her Darkest Fear which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Frankie Keegan lived through a trauma 20 years ago in which her beloved older brother was killed. She's never been able to be rid of the guilt she still harbors and each passing year it only gets worse. And now there's someone else who has not forgotten ... and they're bound and determined that Frankie remembers until her dying day. The suspense starts at the beginning and maintains its pace until the unexpected ending. Well written, there are several characters that are suspect and will have the reader guessing this one or that one. Many thanks to the author / Boldwood Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
