Doppel Debussy is a cute short graphic novel about a translator who abuses a strange drug to meet a slightly unreasonable deadline while partying too much with her friends. A cautionary tale about work-life balance. As usual, Sumire's work is cute, contemplative, and trans in an If You Know You Know And If You Don't You'll Miss It sort of way. The juxtaposition of the main character's cuteness with her spiral of self-destruction is unnerving, leaving you waiting for the other shoe to drop in some deeply horrific way. Yet when it does, it's a great relief in how simple the consequences are. There's no real body horror. But instead a revelation of the knives society holds to our throat every day. Very good. Solid A. Read it. It's kind of for everyone. Content Warnings: excess alcohol consumption, party girl outfits, poop people, and the looming economic threats of capitalist society.
