Naturalismo e ontologia costituisce la versione rivista e ampliata delle John Dewey Lectures, tenute da Wilfrid Sellars all’Università di Chicago nel 1974. Il volume rappresenta quindi una delle sintesi più mature della riflessione del “savio di Pittsburgh”. In esso Sellars opera il tentativo di unificare in forma sistematica le concezioni ontologiche, semantiche e di filosofia della mente che aveva sviluppato nei precedenti trent’anni. Proprio per questo carattere sistematico, Naturalismo e ontologia è divenuto un testo classico per la filosofia analitica del Novecento, in grado di suscitare approfonditi dibattiti nei più disparati ambiti della stessa. Risulta infatti indubbiamente affascinante il tentativo di proporre una teoria del significato e del riferimento che possa convergere con una profonda forma di naturalismo nel quale, in maniera per certi versi rivoluzionaria, riescano a convivere realismo scientifico e pragmatismo.
