Award winning designs for dual-use fallout shelters are presented, representing contributions by the design professions toward development of the national defense resource. The focus and concept of the competition is described as the basis for judging. The nature of dual-use shelter is discussed, which contributes to understanding of the techniques for controlling exposure to gamma radiation from fallout. Graphic illustrations are given of award winning dual-use shelter space in community structures appropriate to residential areas.
