Maurice Marie Émile Leblanc (11 décembre 1864 - 6 novembre 1941) était un romancier et écrivain français de nouvelles, connu principalement comme le créateur du gentleman voleur et détective fictif Arsène Lupin, souvent décrit comme un homologue français de la création d'Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes .
Le premier récit d'Arsène Lupin parut dans une série de nouvelles qui fut sérialisée dans la revue Je sais tout, à partir du n° 6, datée du 15 juillet 1905. Clairement créée à la demande éditoriale, il est possible que Leblanc ait aussi lu Les 21 jours d'un neurasthénique (1901), qui met en scène un gentleman voleur nommé Arthur Lebeau, et il avait vu la comédie Scrupules (1902) de Mirbeau, dont le personnage principal est un gentleman voleur.
