A primeggiare è la figura di Charlus, una delle più grandi creazioni dell'universo proustiano, insieme al personaggio di Albertine, entrambi protagonisti di episodi erotici a sfondo omosessuale. Ma Sodoma contiene anche uno dei momenti più alti, vibranti e commoventi della Recherche: la scoperta, da parte del Narratore, delle celebri "intermittenze del cuore".
