Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra fue un novelista, poeta y dramaturgo español. Su novela Don Quijote a menudo se considera su obra magna, así como la primera novela moderna. Se supone que Miguel de Cervantes nació en Alcalá de Henares. Su padre fue Rodrigo de Cervantes, cirujano de ascendencia cordobesa. Poco se sabe de su madre Leonor de Cortinas, salvo que era natural de Arganda del Rey. En 1569, Cervantes se mudó a Italia, donde sirvió como ayuda de cámara de Giulio Acquaviva, un rico sacerdote que fue elevado a cardenal al año siguiente. Para entonces, Cervantes se había enrolado como soldado en un regimiento de infantería de la Armada española y continuó su vida militar hasta 1575, cuando fue capturado por corsarios argelinos. Luego fue liberado por rescate de sus captores por sus padres y los trinitarios, una orden religiosa católica.
