First published in 1855, Logging is also known as "Cutting down the forest" or "Woodcutting", and tells about one day of an artillery platoon during the Caucasian War. It was first published in the Sovremennik magazine. the story is told from the perspective of a cadet commanding a platoon of an artillery battery. On one of the February days, a platoon of junkies is assigned to "woodcutting" - to accompany and cover the soldiers who will cut down the forest near the enemy for firewood.
