Sicilia: «Una terra difficile da governare perché difficile da capire». A questa terra, a tutte le sue «corde» («la seria, la civile, la pazza» scrisse una volta Pirandello), al passato più oscuro come al presente più invadente Sciascia prestò sempre un’attenzione puntuale, appassionata, partecipe e al tempo stesso inflessibile nella descrizione dei mali. E per una volta provò ad articolare tutti questi temi e questi livelli della realtà in un solo libro: questa "Corda pazza" (1970), che si presenta, rispetto all’isola, «vuote le mani, ma pieni gli occhi del ricordo di lei», come scrisse Ibn Hamdis, poeta arabo-siculo opportunamente citato da Sciascia.
