Nightcrawling is told through the descriptive first person narrative of Kiara, the seventeen-year-old main character who has to fend for herself following the death of her father, the referral of her mother to a rehab clinic and the idleness of her brother who wants to make it in the music business as a rapper instead of getting a job. When the landlord raises the rent, Kiara doesn't want to end up on the streets, but that ironically is where she turns to.
About the author
Leila Mottley is the 2018 Oakland Youth Poet Laureate. Her work has been featured in the New York Times and Oprah Daily. She was born and raised in Oakland and continues to live in the Town. Nightcrawling is her first novel.
