Buck, La buona terra (1931) è il primo romanzo della trilogia The House of Earth, che narra le vicende della famiglia di Wang Lung, visceralmente attaccato alla sua terra, e dell'umile e rassegnata O-Lan, sua moglie. Il tema centrale è quello della vita patriarcale, legata a usanze secolari, del contadino cinese, per il quale la terra rappresentava tutto: il benessere, l'unione della famiglia, le tradizioni più sacre, le virtù delle generazioni passate e le speranze di quelle future. La buona terra è il libro che ha decretato la fama della Buck, che in questo romanzo descrive con sobrietà, potenza e un senso profondo e sottile di umanità un mondo di umili e oppressi. La sua scrittura, realistica e schiva, dal lessico scarno, ma capace di suscitare emozioni, affascina i lettori con la novità di un racconto che rivela un Paese fino allora sconosciuto, con la sua millenaria cultura, la sua antica miseria, la sua dignità, la sua poesia delle cose semplici.
