Tra i suoi averi c'è uno scrigno che contiene un bassorilievo d'argilla raffigurante una creatura dalla testa di polpo, ritagli di giornale e un manoscritto intitolato "Culto di Cthulhu". Nella prima parte del documento il defunto prozio riferisce del suo incontro con Wilcox, un giovane artista che racconta di aver scolpito il bassorilievo in seguito a un sogno angoscioso di città perdute. Seguendo queste tracce e quelle del marinaio norvegese Gustaf Johansen, naufrago in un'isola fantasma comparsa dal nulla, Thurston scopre l'esistenza di Cthulhu, creatura tentacolare che abita le profondità degli abissi marini e la cui rivelazione potrebbe diventare fatale per sé e, forse, per l'intero genere umano.
