Pubblicata anonima nel 1781 e rappresentata per la prima volta a Mannheim nel 1782, la tragedia mette in scena un dissidio tra fratelli: Franz Moor, l'infido macchinatore di complotti, e Karl Moor, l'idealista masnadiero, prototipo del nobile fuorilegge dello Sturm und Drang che per 'migliorare il mondo' combatte contro ogni sopruso, ma soprattutto contro la legge ingiusta dei tiranni. Il successo della tragedia costò a Schiller la caduta in disgrazia presso il duca di Wurttemberg, avviando un'avventurosa vicenda di arresti, fughe e peregrinazioni.
