The treatment of hypertension in an elderly patient – even when started after the age of 80 years – is beneficial . The treatment should be introduced cautiously to avoid the risk of disturbances in cerebral circulation and subsequent falls. The target of the treatment should be normotension (blood pressure preferably less than 150/90 mmHg), unless prevented by orthostatic problems or impairment of renal function.
