Già da giovane considerato uno più abili scrittori di racconti brevi del suo tempo, James è passato alla storia per aver scritto opere classiche come Daisy Miller (1878) e Ritratto di signora (1881), quest'ultimo adattato anche nell'omonimo film con Nicole Kidman e John Malkovich. Avendo trascorso gran parte della sua vita in Europa, James divenne cittadino britannico poco prima di morire.
