Il volume che qui presentiamo in edizione italiana era parte di una storia delle idee politiche scritta da Voegelin negli anni Cinquanta, ma da lui lasciata inedita. Il manoscritto fu però visionato da John H. Hallowell, il quale ne estrapolò alcuni capitoli, «Crisis and apocalypse of man» e «Revolution and the new science», giudicandoli sostanzialmente autonomi dal resto dell'opera e di enorme importanza per la comprensione dei processi politici contemporanei. È cosí che nasce l'edizione del 1975 di «From Enlightenment to Revolution», analisi organica e puntuale di quegli aspetti del pensiero politico del settecento e dell'ottocento che, secondo Voegelin, rappresentano le premesse ideologiche all'affermazione delle ideologie totalitarie.
