About this ebook

The first ever biography of Jane Seymour, Henry VIII's third wife, who died in childbirth giving the king what he craved most - a son and heir. Jane Seymour is often portrayed as meek and mild and as the most successful, but one of the least significant, of Henry VIII's wives. The real Jane was a very different character, demure and submissive yet with a ruthless streak - as Anne Boleyn was being tried for treason, Jane was choosing her wedding dress. From the lowliest origins of any of Henry's wives her rise shows an ambition every bit as great as Anne's. Elizabeth Norton tells the thrilling life of a country girl from rural Wiltshire who rose to the throne of England and became the ideal Tudor woman.

As much of Jane Seymour's life is lost to history it is difficult to write a biography of her life. This book for obvious reasons can't offer a reader anything they would not otherwise know. Even with that in mind the author speculates a lot: the phrase 'may have have' occurs 48 times, 'probably' appears 35. With the utmost respect to Elizabeth Norton the use of these phrases diminishes the credibility of the text, in a way that phrases like, 'evidence suggests', would not. The author also states that Henry VIII and Francis I at The Field of Cloth of Gold took place in 1522. Perhaps I am missing something (and someone please correct me if that is the case) but all other sources put it at 1520.
