*voluntarily and honestly reviewed the ARC I received from the author* It's a 4.5 for me. Detached is the start to a new series by Hyder. Nyx has a plan for her life, and it does not include the powers she's lived with all her family's lives. Stuff happens, things occur, and there's a spicy thing that no one dares talk about. The beginning was rough. Nyx is a very bitter and strong-minded woman whose life as a female cop in a male-dominated field makes her that much harder. So I get it, and she's had a rougher childhood with a family that's supposed to provide the one place she can be safe. She is the way she is because of her past. It's not the easiest way to fall for someone when you meet them, but it actually made me more interested in her because you could practically smell the character development coming. And come, it did. Essex is adorable. He's not perfect, not all one thing, and it's endearing. Nyx's family drama was surprisingly relatable and it was nice being able to see the way she interacts with them, the good and the bad. I thought her brother was a little... sensitive and thought it was interesting with how she handled him. There was no good or bad way about it... but it's clear she loves her family, faults and all. The world itself was, at first, hard to grasp but I liked the mystery once I got it. The way things slowly unraveled was very thrilling, especially towards the end. I like the scary thing Hyder has created. The end suckered me right in and I can't wait to see what will happen.

Full disclosure I'm fortunate to be included in the ARC team. I read this within 2 days of downloading it as I had a real struggle putting it down, definitely a page turner. If you liked Elicia's other series you'll NOT be disappointed with this one, its rather fast past but the action is well thought out, and not just for action or dramas sake. The characters are as usual relatable and well thought out. I enjoy their interactions with one another. I enjoyed the way that some the everyday weird things that happen, are worked into the story to make sense, that light bulb that blinks, the cold breeze that blows past your face or neck and there is no breeze. That sort of thing. Adds an extra layer of believability to the "fiction". This book had me holding my breath in more than one place, clench my fists in others, literally laugh out loud and of course had me in tears in one crucial part of the story and you'll know the bit when you come to it. I would have liked it to continue a bit longer because I want to know what happens but I guess I'm going to have to wait for book 2.

This is Detached (Saphera Nyx book 1) written by Elicia Hyder. This the beginning of a wonderful new series that is action packed and oh so good! You will laugh and you may even cry, but this one will hold your interest and your heart from the very beginning. There are many things that are around us that we never see. Saphera has run from her past and her parents legacy for most of her life. When things come and hit her square in the face, how does she handle it? Well she proceeds to dive in with both feet! How far would you go to protect the man that you love? What if things weren't exactly clear? Well Saphera is at the forefront of all the action in this book and has proceeded to abandon me in my hour of need! I need more of this story! There is so much more to be learned! Hurry with the next one please Elicia Hyder!! I'm dying over here!!
