ACS In Focus Electrochemical Imaging introduces some of the most exciting and important imaging techniques in electrochemistry. This digital primer, targeted at senior undergraduate students and first-year graduate students, demonstrates how electrochemical imaging has become increasingly important in enhancing our fundamental understanding of the electrode/solution interface.

 Chapter 1 introduces electrochemistry, the unique aspects of electrochemical reactions, and the key importance of electrochemical imaging. Chapter 2 focuses on array-based electrochemical imaging methods. Chapter 3 describes several electrochemical imaging methods based on small scanning probes. Chapter 4 introduces electrochemical imaging methods based on optical microscopies, such as fluorescence, dark field, and Raman spectroscopy. The last chapter is devoted to briefly discussing some imaging methods for examining the electrochemical interface with molecular and atomic scale resolution. It also reveals exciting ways of using in-situ methods, such as electron microscopies, to image electrochemical processes in situ.

Todd H. Lewis is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Washington, working under the direction of Prof. Bo Zhang. He graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with both a B.S. in Chemistry and a B.A. in History from the University of Arizona in 2020, earning his M.S. in Chemistry from the University of Washington in 2021. His research involves coupling electrochemical measurement with optical microscopy through the use of closed-bipolar electrochemistry for the spatiotemporal detection of fast, transient events implementing micro and nanoscale devices he constructs at the University of Washington Nanofabrication Cleanroom Facility. His methods and devices will likely find wide use in many applications such as electrochemical imaging, transient detection, as well as electrochemical sensor and biosensor technology. 


Ruixuan Wan is a Ph.D. candidate specializing in analytical electrochemistry in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Washington. She obtained her B.S. and M.S. in Pharmaceutical Science from China Pharmaceutical University in 2016 and 2019, respectively. Transitioning from her master’s studies, Ruixuan embarked on her doctoral research journey at the University of Washington, working under the guidance of Prof. Bo Zhang. Her research is dedicated to leveraging single-entity electrochemistry, which encompasses collision and translocation of individual nanoparticles to develop novel biosensors with ultrahigh sensitivity. 


Wes R. Leininger is a Ph.D. student studying analytical chemistry at the University of Washington. Their research focuses on  using single fluorophore detection to study the fundamental properties of electrochemical interfaces, specifically the gas-solution boundary of electrochemically generated gas nanobubbles. They received a B.Sc. in Chemistry, with an emphasis in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Utah in 2020.  


Bo Zhang is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Washington. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Shandong University (1999) and Peking University (2002), respectively. He worked with Professor Henry White at the University of Utah and was awarded a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry in 2006. He joined UW in 2008 after finishing his postdoctoral research in Professor Andrew Ewing’s laboratory at Pennsylvania State University. His recent awards include the 2020 American Chemical Society (ACS) Electrochemistry Award, the Royce Murray Young Investigator Award (2013) from the Society for Electroanalytical Chemistry (SEAC), and the Sloan Research Fellowship (2012). In 2014, he was selected as one of the Top 40 under 40 by the Analytical Scientist. He was the President of the Society for Electroanalytical Chemistry (SEAC) in the 2019-2021 term.
