Catherine Morland est une jeune fille à laquelle le destin va jouer bien des tours. Lors d’un séjour à Bath, villégiature prisée par une société soucieuse de se montrer, la jeune Catherine se lie d’amitié avec Isabelle, qu’elle admire plus qu’une sœur, et son cœur s’embrase pour Henry Tilney. Le bonheur, dans le meilleur des mondes. Mais c’est compter sans le talent de Jane Austen pour torturer ses héroïnes et leur faire subir les affres de la désillusion.
Un très beau roman, à l’écriture délicieusement surannée, avec des personnages qui en font un tableau plein d’humour et un rien cynique d’une certaine classe de la société anglaise. Des paysages aussi qu’on aimerait fouler. Et bien sûr une belle histoire d’amour.

Austen's plots often explore the dependence of women on marriage in the pursuit of favourable social standing and economic security. Her works critique the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th-century literary realism.
