Michael Berg zette zichzelf bij het grote publiek op de kaart met Nacht in Parijs, waar hij in 2013 de Gouden Strop mee won. Met Het meisje op de weg en Broertje bevestigde hij dat hij tot de top van Nederlandse thrillerschrijvers behoort; beide boeken waren genomineerd voor de Gouden Strop. De vermissing is een bijzondere titel. Het is zijn tiende thriller, en dus een jubileumthriller, en daarnaast is het een weerzien met het hoofdpersonage uit Nacht in Parijs: journaliste Chantal Zwart.
