Maar in een tankstation laat hij de auto stelen door Chad Lowell en Abe Greenberg, twee beatnik-schrijvers die op weg zijn naar Amarillo in Texas. Het is al snel hommeles tussen de twee rivalen en een uitzinnige Chad schiet Abe dood. Chad slaat op de vlucht en duikt onder in een circusgezelschap.
