Après "Main Street", l’étude de la cité, il se jette dans celle du monde des affaires, à l’assaut duquel les jeunes Américains de la première moitié du XXe siècle se lancent avec intrépidité. Et c’est "Babbitt", qui met en scène le type même du petit «business man» de la classe moyenne américaine, du «négociant moderne» avec son bon sens et son esprit moyen, entré dans les affaires comme on entre en religion, apôtre de la bureaucratie, satisfait de lui-même, vidé de toute personnalité par son conformisme social et son idéal du business. "Babbitt" a connu un tel succès lors de sa publication que le mot est aujourd’hui passé dans le langage courant pour désigner ce type de personnage.

Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) was an American novelist, short-story writer, and playwright, and was the first writer from the United States to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. Known for an insightful and critical take on American society in the early 20th century, Lewis is also notable for his strong female characters. Born in Minnesota, Lewis began writing potboiler fiction shortly after graduating from Yale, and experienced blockbuster success with his debut novel Main Street in 1920. Other notable works include Babbitt (1922), Elmer Gantry (1927), and It Can't Happen Here (1935).
