व्हॅनेसा वुड्सनं २००९ मध्ये एका देखण्या प्रियमेटॉलॉजिस्ट- ( चिम्पांझी, बबून्स, बोनोबो इत्यादी एप जातीच्या प्रायमेट्सचा अभ्यास करणारा शास्त्रज्ञ) ब्रायन हेरसोबत-  लग्न करायचं ठरवलं, जो आजवरच्या सर्वांत महत्त्वाच्या प्रश्नाचं उत्तर शोधण्यासाठी धडपडत होता. असं नेमकं काय आहे ज्यामुळे आपण ‘मानव’ बनलो? त्याला विश्वास असतो की या प्रश्नाचं उत्तर  कॉन्गोमध्ये- फ्रान्सपेक्षा आकारानं तिप्पट मोठं जंगल असणाऱ्या आणि सतत युद्ध सुरू असतं, तिथंच मिळेल, कारण बोनोबो फक्त कॉन्गोमध्येच राहतात. व्हॅनेसा त्याच्यासोबत अनाथ बोनोबोंचं आश्रयस्थान असलेल्या किन्शासा अभयारण्यात राहायला जाते. जंगलातील प्राण्यांना मारून त्यांचं मांस बेकायदा विकण्याचा व्यवसाय करणारे जंगलचोर (बुशमीट ट्रेडर्स) बोनोबोंना ठार मारतात आणि त्यांची अनाथ पिल्लं पाळीव प्राणी म्हणून विकतात. तिथून त्यांची सुटका करून त्यांना ‘लोला’मध्ये आणलं जाण्याआधीची अवस्था दारुण असते.  काळ्या जादूकरता आवश्यक म्हणून त्यांची बोटं आणि अंगठे कापून नेलेले असतात. काही हद्दपार झालेले लोक या पिल्लांचा आपल्या घरामध्ये मुलांप्रमाणे सांभाळ करतात. तिथं व्हॅनेसाला स्वतःचा शोध लागतो. बोनोबो हे पुरुषांवर फारसा विश्वास टाकत नाहीत हे स्पष्ट झाल्यावर, व्हॅनेसानं सगळे चाचणी-प्रयोग पार पाडावेत, अशी अपेक्षा केली जाते, आणि मग हळू हळू बोनोबो आणि तिच्यात एक सखोल प्रेमाचा बंध निर्माण होतो. त्या परिसराच्या प्रेमात तर ती पडतेच; शिवाय नवऱ्यावरच्या प्रेमाचाही तिला नव्यानं साक्षात्कार होतो. सहजीवनाचा अर्थ तिला खऱ्या अर्थानं उलगडतो.
