E a teatro, ogni sera, c’era una bella scelta fra John Gielgud e Edith Evans e Ralph Richardson e Peggy Ashcroft e Laurence Olivier e Margaret Rutherford e Alec Guinness e Bea Lillie o Vivien Leigh... Settecento, o anni Trenta? Avanguardie di protesta, o ribalderie vittoriane? Forte impegno, o vaudeville di travestiti? Beethoven diretto da Klemperer, Galina Ulanova coi balletti del Bolshoi, o novità di Benjamin Britten e Samuel Beckett? Il giovane Arbasino schedava le politiche del dopoguerra al Royal Institute of International Affairs. E intanto osservava il funzionamento delle tipiche istituzioni, poi definite anche «prestigiose» o «mitiche»: il «Times», il «New Statesman», il Labour Party, le Corti di Giustizia, le bande dei teddy boys, la destra liberale e la sinistra accademica, l’underground alto e basso, il sense of humour e l’understatement elegante di critici esemplari come Cyril Connolly e Kenneth Tynan, Peter Heyworth e John Pope-Hennessy. A Londra si potevano fare diverse scoperte, e parecchi mostri sacri aprivano indulgenti le loro tane. Da Roma, Mario Pannunzio chiedeva delle «Lettere inglesi» da pubblicare sul «Mondo». Nacquero così queste corrispondenze confidenziali, che il tempo ha trasformato in manualetto ‘live’ di grandi autori del Novecento.
