About this ebook

A Victorian bluestocking with a passion for lost causes attracts the unwilling attention of a frost-hearted viscount during her tumultuous debut season in Bath in USA Today bestselling author Mimi Matthews’s fifth book in her acclaimed Somerset Stories series.

West Country beauty Hannah Heywood may be quiet with fashionable strangers, but when it comes to animals in need, she has no trouble finding her voice. Newly arrived in Bath for her very first season, all she desires is to find one like-minded gentleman. A man of warmth and compassion, as sensitive to animals as he is to people. But if such a man exists, he dare not approach her. Not with the tall, blond, and menacing Viscount St. Clare standing in the way.

James Beresford, Viscount St. Clare has often been described as a sentient block of ice. A man so cold and dispassionate, he would never suit a young lady of Hannah’s disposition. And she would certainly never suit him. Focused on repairing his family’s infamous reputation, James requires a diamond of the first water. The daughter of a duke or a marquess, at least, not a simple country girl with a passion for four-legged creatures.

And yet, there’s something about conscience-driven young Hannah that draws James, first to Bath, and then into one increasingly hare-brained scheme after another. She confounds him at every turn, subverting his expectations and threatening to do what no lady has succeeded in doing before—thawing his ice-cold heart.

What an absolutely lovely and sweet romance! I will admit that I giggled out loud with a certain kitten rescuing scene. It was just so lovely seeing James and Hannah getting to know one another and to fall in love, and of course see a little more of their families. As many people in the story failed to understand Hannah and how fiercely she can defend those she loves, I initially also thought her more timid than she was. It was fun seeing her come alive, and to act with self assurance in her quiet manner. I love that she stays true to herself in all ways. She was actually quite the firecracker when it is warranted. Her defense of those she cares for is admirable. I also really enjoyed watching the icy James thaw, and come into his own. As I read and got to know his backstory even more, his cold facade became so much more understandable. And his Darcy-esque faux pas was quite entertaining, and worked very well to help him break down what he really wanted.

Finished it in a day, I’ve been eagerly awaiting this! St. Clare/James is icy and cold. Determined to redeem his family’s reputation, he never steps a toe out of line & follows society’s expectations perfectly. He’s set on marrying someone perfectly suitable for his position in society. That’s why his sudden attraction and interest in Hannah Heywood is so shocking. She doesn’t fit his ideal at all. Endearing Mr. Darcy type moments as he lets himself really fall.

Another new favorite from the talented Mimi Matthews! Ever since the first book in the Somerset Stories I’ve been anxiously anticipating Hannah’s & James’ story, & I absolutely adored it! It’s a delightful, opposites attract romance with a bit of Pride & Prejudice vibes. I enjoyed watching the icy, austere James Beresford, Viscount St. Clare fall for the shy, kindhearted Hannah Heywood. With a sizzling undercurrent of attraction, a touch of humor, & all the delights of Bath, it’s a must read!
