The Condition of the Working Class in England is a study of the industrial working class in Victorian England. It was written during Engels's stay in Manchester, the city at the heart of the Industrial Revolution,. In Hard Times, the fictional town was modeled on Manchester. Towns such as these helped to produce the wealth, but the cost in human happiness was great. Dickens expose the bad state of relations between factory employers and their employees. Mary Barton is the first novel by English author Elizabeth Gaskell, published in 1848. The story also deals with the difficulties faced by the Victorian working class. It conveys contemporary concerns about the destructive effects of industrialisation. This is one of many books in the series 3 Books To Know. Friedrich Engels (1820 - 1895) was a German philosopher, journalist, businessman and close aid of Karl Marx. He, along with Karl Marx, founded the socialist theory and co-authored 'The Communist Manifesto'. Engels was considered to be a brilliant mind and was quick and sharp in his judgement. Despite being a businessman, he also had knowledge about branch of natural sciences, physics, botany, chemistry and biology. Engels published countless articles and more than dozen books in his lifetime. Charles Dickens (1812 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the 20th century critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories are still widely read today. Elizabeth Gaskell (1810 - 1865) was an English novelist, biographer, and short story writer. Her novels offer a detailed portrait of the lives of many strata of Victorian society, including the very poor, and are of interest to social historians as well as lovers of literature.
