His novel The Cabin at the End of the World was adapted into the Universal Pictures film Knock at the Cabin.His essays and short fiction have appeared in the New York Times, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, and numerous ""year's best"" anthologies. He lives outside of Boston, Massachusetts, with his family and has a master's degree in mathematics.
