Soon after her mother's death Lesley Morland's father, Ed, is offered the position of Station Master in Bountiful, Kansas. Having lost an arm fighting in the Spanish American war, Ed has a weakness for alcohol and difficulty keeping any job. Thinking Bountiful will provide them a fresh start, they are disappointed to find the town isn't much more than a station house and a few outbuildings. Still, railroad magnate Adam Benedict's proposed Texas Line will run through Bountiful, so the town begins to prosper.
