Soon after her mother's death Lesley Morland's father, Ed, is offered the position of Station Master in Bountiful, Kansas. Having lost an arm fighting in the Spanish American war, Ed has a weakness for alcohol and difficulty keeping any job. Thinking Bountiful will provide them a fresh start, they are disappointed to find the town isn't much more than a station house and a few outbuildings. She is overwhelmed by unexpected circumstances and responsibilities with the future of Bountiful itself hanging in the balance.
