About this audiobook

The second book by prize-winning Japanese novelist Fuminori Nakamura to be available in English translation, a follow-up to 2012's critically acclaimed The Thief—another fantastically creepy, electric literary thriller that explores the limits of human depravity—and the powerful human instinct to resist evil.

When Fumihiro Kuki is eleven years old, his elderly, enigmatic father calls him into his study for a meeting. "I created you to be a cancer on the world," his father tells him. It is a tradition in their wealthy family: a patriarch, when reaching the end of his life, will beget one last child to dedicate to causing misery in a world that cannot be controlled or saved. From this point on, Fumihiro will be specially educated to learn to create as much destruction and unhappiness in the world around him as a single person can. Between his education in hedonism and his family's resources, Fumihiro's life is one without repercussions. Every door is open to him, for he need obey no laws and may live out any fantasy he might have, no matter how many people are hurt in the process. But as his education progresses, Fumihiro begins to question his father's mandate, and starts to resist.

I have read the book when it was first released in the English translation. Just recently I have purchased the audiobook version to listen while I work, and was grasped back into the world of Evil and the Mask. The audio helps me relive the pages in an immersive experience. I have already bought the book for many friends this holiday season. Its very much one of my favorite books.

This is my absolute favourite Nakamura novel. It is uncomfortable and raw and many times painful (if you suffer from PTSD around child abuse- emotional, physical or sexual, evil and the mask's content may be triggering for you). I found the concept of a young child being forced to grow up much quicker than he ever should have in order to protect another something that was very captivating. I also like the way Nakamura pitches the "do people become evil or are they born as such?" question for the reader to ponder. It's very organic but a concept that we return to throughout the stages of the characters life. The novel may feel abrupt in its ending or incomplete, but that's the reality of life. I appreciate Nakamura immensely as an author who can reflect the truths of the human experience when placed under immense pressure so organically through the use of character relationships.
