About this audiobook

Knowledge is power. That would be the motto of Lander University, had it not been snatched up and used to death by others long before the school was founded. For while Lander offers a full range of courses to nearly all students, it also offers a small number of specialty classes to a very select few. Lander is home to the Hero Certification Program, a curriculum designed to develop students with superhuman capabilities, commonly known as Supers, into official Heroes. Five of this year's freshmen are extra special. They have a secret aside from their abilities, one that they must guard from even their classmates. For every one person in the world with abilities they can control, there are three who lack such skill. These lesser super beings, Powereds as they are called, have always been treated as burdens and second class citizens. Though there has been ample research in the area, no one has ever succeeded in turning a Powered into a regular human, let alone a Super. That is, until now . . .

It's almost like the author was trying to write a bad book. The narrator sucks in a quick sharp breath after every sentence, it gets annoying fast. His narration voice sounds like a AI reading a phone book. And while he uses different voices for other characters, most of them are cliched stereotypes. The characters are paper thin with little to no personality, who constantly hint that they have secrets and agendas but actually don't. There's absolutely no payoff for the many lies and manipulations. The setting is a supposedly normal college campus that also has a few super classes, but no one who has ever visited a real campus would think of it as accurate. There's both casual and blatant sexism, everything from lines like "Let me guess, you're a women's studies major", to a handsome jerk who sleeps with a new girl every night because he's handsome. I've listened to other Drew Hayes books that were good - I recommend Fred the Vampire Accountant. This one is awful though.

We are hooked! my husband and i got this for a family road trip... It ended up not being very family friendly (teens swear and act like teenagers) but we ended up having to get the next installment, it was so good.

Surprise hit! I started this series on a whim after the many many 5 star reviews and I was pleasantly surprised. This is a very entertaining read, a little juvenile in some parts but well written and interesting characters. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series
